Diabetes Awareness Month

Help the American Diabetes Association Kiss Diabetes Goodbye

November is Diabetes Awareness Month

During Diabetes Awareness Month we should practice good eating.
Healthy Food Preparations is a way to start. Removing the fats and skins from meats before cooking. You should also be broiling, baking, or stir frying foods instead of frying. Always use less salt there are some very good seasonings that are low in sodium. Also using low/no calorie cooking sprays helps you stay healthy and instead of using salted port try smoked turkey

OLD FASHIONED SUGAR COOKIES

The first recipe I chose was one that Mama used to cook when we were children. We never had much money growing up but Mama always made a way out of no way. With Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies the ingredients are mainly things you probably already have in your cabinets. So these cookies were always a special treat, coming home from school and walking into the house and it smells like heaven. This recipe is so old and worn that I wanted to make sure that this one was the first to be preserved.

1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tablespoon milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cup sifted all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees

1.)Cream butter 2.)Beat in 1 cup sugar, egg, milk, and vanilla 3.)Sift flour baking powder and salt together. 4.) Add to butter mixture. Mix well 5.)Roll dough into small balls 3/4in. in diameter. 6.)Place 2 in. apart on lightly greased cookie sheet. 7.0Flatten tops slightly with the bottom of a glass that has been dipped in sugar 8.) Bake 8-10 minutes or until light brown around edges 9.)Transfer to wire racks. Cool
Makes about 1 1/2 dozen

Hi TastyMamas and welcome to Tasty Mama's: A Collection of Recipes. In this blog I plan to take you along with me in restoring my Mamas cookbook. She has had this cookbook for thirty eight years. I grew up on this cookbook and it is where I learned to cook. But as you can see it needs a little help if it is going to make it to feed my children and my children's children. Here is a picture of her cookbook now. Over time I plan to feature the recipes that I loved as a child growing up because you know children did not eat much of anything growing up. But somethings I just could not resist. Especially the sweets. So stay tuned and comeback and enjoy the wonderful foods that I plan to prepare for my children and find out if they like it or if they don't Let me know if you made it also and if your family likes it or not. I love comments and welcome them. I will keep you updated on the process of going through this mess and making it better for my mama. With the way that this books looks hopefully I will be done by Mothers Day (next year!)
